Modern  Orthodox,  Religious  Zionist  Rabbis  condemn  Hate  Toward  Arabs

We are rabbis and religious educators who identify with and are active members in the modern Orthodoxy/religious Zionism camp.

We were heartbroken and horrified to see tens of young people who have been filled with hatred and violent attitudes toward Arabs as a group. These attitudes violate the most fundamental principle of the Torah that every human being is created in the image of God and should be treated with infinite respect, love and justice.

The Talmud says that if Torah is properly understood and taught, it is a medicine for life. If the Torah is improperly taught, it can be turned Into a poison, a death potion. These young people have been fed a version of Torah that is poison. Their behavior is a chillul HaShem, that is, it brings disgrace on God, the Torah, and the Jewish people.

We call on their teachers to repent and disown these evil teachings. We reaffirm that the Torah, when properly understood and taught by religious Zionism, is the way of kindness, pleasantness and human dignity - and its paths are paths of peace. Facing Hamas or other Arabs who seek to destroy Israel and the Jewish people does not excuse transforming the Torah into a justification for trying to inflict death on a whole community which contains innocent people and others who, if given a chance, will live in peace and build a better society in Israel.
